13 Things We're Growing in the Garden This Year (TT #13)

Thirteen Things We're Growing in the Garden This Year

Gardening is an excellent way to go green AND to save some money! Even if you don't have much room, there's something like kiddie pool gardening!

So, as I sit here at the computer, Eric is out tilling up the garden. What a guy! Of course, it'll by my turn when we start planting though.

Here's what we're growing (some in the garden, some in pots)

1. Strawberries

2. Zucchini

3. Yellow Squash (straight neck)

4. Green Bell Peppers

5. Red Bell Peppers

6. Cucumbers

7. Romaine Lettuce

8. Buttercrunch Lettuce

9. Cherry Tomatoes

10. Grape Tomatoes

11. "Boy" Tomatoes (Better Boy and Big Boy)

12. "Girl" Tomatoes (Early Girl)

13. Beef Master Tomatoes (that name cracks us up)

(Okay...I'll cheat and put in a number fourteen -- 14. Brandywine Heirloom Tomatoes)

A lot of tending there, but worthwhile.

Right now, it's about 2 hours before dinner, and you sure got me drooling!

I'll bring the paper plates...we can make a huge salad and then strawberry shortcake for dessert. Okay?

How fun! We are growing all of those things (except the peppers) and a few others - pumpkins, melons, berries, potatoes, onions, stuff like that. I hope you have a bounty this season!

Happy TT!

That sounds like one tasty garden. Since I'm in an apartment, I only have some basil growing in a pot, but I'm very proud of myself.

Very nice!

Last year we had a rubbish crop - most of the veg rotted on the plants before they ripened as it was so wet here. Even the spuds got blight.

So this year I haven't felt very inspired. We have only leeks in at the moment. This perked me up a bit though - might buy me some beans and peas to grow.

topchamp -- we had the same problem last year! When it got about midway through the season, we started noticing some tomatoes rotting on the vine before they were ripened. Well, then as the season went on, it happened more and more. The only tomatoes not effected were our grape tomatoes.

But, we still thought we'd give it another go this year, since the year before had been much better.

Reminds me of my life 10 years ago. I miss having a garden, but I don't miss pulling weeds.

We do actually do a little bit of freezing, but we don't typically end up with way too many tomatoes. My parents pay for portion of the garden expenses, and then my Mom comes and takes stuff out of the garden. She takes A LOT of tomatoes. She uses a lot, but freezes them as well. And, then we always have other family that says things like, "Hey -- if you have extra tomatoes, we'd love some."

That's wonderful! I'd like to start gardening. Right now I can't even get catnip to grow though so I'm not sure I'm cut out for it. :p

Our family grows heirlooms and I have 3 different varieties of brandywines. They are my favorites! Great list. We are growing most of those as well.
I just love getting my hands in the dirt.
Mr. Muscles has to till up the smaller garden so I can get more in the ground.
Happy TT!

Sigh. I used to have a wonderful garden! We loved it. Just go out and pick your lettuce and asparagus for dinner.

But then we started camping, and the garden would be great in April & May, but when we went away we couldn't get anyway to tend it properly. So I stopped gardening.

I'm sure there's a spiritual analogy in there somewhere...
