This is our fourth year of gardening, and it again found us making some kind of changes to our garden. The first year, Eric built an 8' x 8' raised bed plot. The second year, he added a second 8' x 8' plot right next to it, growing our garden to a 16' x 8' plot. The third year didn't have any additions, though we did grow several things in pots.
And, then came this year. We decided we needed big changes, so, to start, Eric ripped out all of the old timbers that made up the garden (being careful not to rip out too much of our strawberry patch). He then worked on tilling it into four plots (as seen below).
Then, a few weekends later, he busily worked on four plots of raised bed gardens. These, however, were higher than our previous beds, at 12 inches tall. He built them four feet by eight feet. He worked so hard on them! I especially appreciated the care he gave to building one specifically around where our existing strawberries were.

Are you gardening this year? What are you growing in it? I would love more ideas of some fun things to plant that we haven't tried before. (Although, we did plant a raspberry bush, and the bunnies ate all of the leaves off! We are hoping it will come back, but I'm not holding my breath.)

We moved here to central KY last year and have started square foot gardening this year. Strawberries, potatoes, tomatoes, lettuce, peas and herbs so far. But mine is so weedy compared to your's! Your's is BEAUTIFUL! I have cukes, watermelon and other stuff ready to go in. Gets to be that manic time of year in planting.
very nice and just think of all the wonderful tasteful items that will come from those beds in the future
What a great job, and I love seeing how lush the strawberries are. We planted a huge garden this year and were swimming in squash, tomatoes, green beans and peppers.
I have only one raised bed 4'*6'
The plan of what we will be growing is on my blog
Very Nice!
What a beautiful job you and your husband did!! How nice it will be to have the fresh fruit and veggies!! I just planted my strawberries in my strawberry pot and added the compost to my garden. I have a raised bed that is about 6 x13. I love it! I am planning on planting tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and not sure what else yet-mabye some string beans. I love having a garden. I am busy tackling the inside for my tackle it tuesday for now-but soon-I'll be doing the garden!
My son along with his dad are working on their third round of gardening. They actually keep a year round garden. This year we have lots of tomatoes, some potatoes both irish and sweet, bell and banana peppers, butternut, zuccini, yellow and acorn squash, red & green onions, swiss chard, kale, brussels sprouts, red and green cabbage, some lettuces, green beans, broccoli and cauliflower, radishes, and maybe some other things. Jonathan has decided to be a landscape architect so we're allowing him also to plant several flower gardens and other plant varieties around the yard. He's also been given opportunity to volunteer at our local Arboretum so he can get lots more experience and learning in.
Since we have so much in our garden Jonathan is using the overflow to raise money to work his way to go the camps he wants to attend this summer. He's having a great time and is also learning to eat some things that have not been the norm for him. I'm so excited to see him become more health conscience.
Very nice! I love the small raised beds with only one crop each - it makes it so much easier to tell what is what as they come up. I'm going to add more next year.
We are growing a lot on our garden. You have such a nice large yard; you could really add a lot of fruit trees, berry bushes, and grape vines. You could add them around the perimeter of your garden and not invade on the grass very much, either. Our garden is mostly around the edges, leaving the middle open for the children to play. I have a few pictures up here: http://theprudenthomemaker.com/thekitchengarden.aspx
plus a list of everything that I am growing. I hope to have some more (bigger!) pictures up soon so that the layour is more obvious.
We have harvested about 3 quarts of blackberries from our bushes in the last two weeks.
We should start getting a good number of tomatoes soon (I hope!) and hopefully the zucchini will start going soon as well! My butternut squash have a couple of little tiny squash that have formed so far.
This morning I picked some figs from our tree. This fall we will have pomegranates.
I am working to always have something different ripe in the garden all year round!
How much space did you leave between the beds? I am planning my garden for the house we are buying and not sure how much needed to get through easily...
Thanks, and your garden looks awesome!
Vanessa -- I think there's right around 2 feet in between each garden bed. However big it is, it was big enough that Eric could mow in between them. But, then we decided to put down pea gravel instead.
