Noah was recently invited to a birthday party for a girl that he used to go to school with. I kept thinking, "Hmmm...what should we give a nine year old girl?" And, quite frankly, I didn't feel like spending a lot of money either.
Then, I remembered that this girl enjoyed crafts, as I think many girls of that age do. When I coupled that with the fact that I had been wanting to clean through some of my beads, I realized that I had a perfect combination!
My only new purchase for her gift was some elastic for bracelet making. I already had an extra bead organizer (though it would have only cost $1 - $2 to pick up another one). Then, I went through my many boxes of beads and cleared out ones that I didn't want anymore, but that I also felt were ones that she might enjoy. I tried to pick a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors.
Sure -- I had spent money on the beads before. But, since they were things that were just sitting around my house, it made a great gift for just an extra $1 for elastic cording spent. And, even better, the birthday girl really enjoyed the gift!
In the past, I have also put together a fun scrapbooking kit for someone as a gift from my own stash of new items for someone that wanted to begin scrapbooking.
What are other gifts that you can think of that can be gathered from your home?

Cute set! My daughter is only 5, but would love it. She likes to string beads and sort them.
I buy clothing ahead of time for Abby and sometimes when it's time to get them out, they don't fit her. Since I leave the tags on, I usually add them as a gift for my cousin's daughter. She's 7 months younger than Abby, so this works perfectly!
I think that was a great gift and a truly excellent idea for creating a fun gift from surplus in your home. I especially like that it doesn't look like that. It looks like something you could buy or would create in a store to give.
Thanks for sharing that idea. I know little girls LOVE to make jewelry.
what a thoughtful present.
very thoughtful and creative present.
With all my scrapbook supplies, I never thought to make a kit or anything. GREAT idea!
Like Jenny, I've purchased clothes on sale, only to have them fit in the wrong season. I'll give them to my niece. Another idea, that I haven't done, but had done for us....garden clippings/seedlings. When Tim's Granny died, his aunt transplanted a very special flower to her garden. That Christmas (we live in a warm climate) she gave all of us clippings for our gardens. Now she did buy us the dirt and pot. I think you could give away vegetable and fruit clippings.
I had another idea, but completely forgot, because it has taken me 5 hours to write this...LOL
WHat a cute idea for a present! I have several nieces that would probably love this. :D
When I was little, my mom always sent me to birthday parties with a blank t-shirt or sweatshirt and a bunch of fabric pens or puffy paints. The party guests helped decorate and sign the shirt for the birthday girl so she had a personalized keepsake.
I love this idea for a gift!!!
